Norwich’s Literary Alphabet

Norwich’s Literary Alphabet is the focus of my Master’s project, which seeks to celebrate, inform, and explore the rich literary heritage of Norwich. This project offers a unique journey through the alphabet, with each letter representing a significant figure, location, or theme tied to Norwich’s literary history. From medieval times to the present day, Norwich has been a vibrant centre of literary culture, producing influential writers, poets, and thinkers who have left an integral mark on English literature.

As part of my Master’s research, I am delving deep into the literary landscape of Norwich, England’s first UNESCO City of Literature. Norwich’s literary lineage includes icons such as Julian of Norwich, one of the earliest known female authors in the English language, and Sir Thomas Browne, whose work spans philosophy, religion, and science. The city’s literary culture is further enriched by contemporary writers, thriving independent bookshops, and the National Centre for Writing, which continues to nurture new talent.

Each letter of the alphabet will serve as a gateway to stories that reveal the profound connections between Norwich and the written word, from the medieval manuscripts housed in its ancient cathedrals to the modern literary festivals that draw writers and readers from across the globe.

This project aims not only to educate and inform but also to inspire a new generation of readers and writers. By tracing the threads of Norwich’s literary past, I hope to illuminate its influence on contemporary literature and emphasise the city’s continuing role as a beacon of literary culture. Whether you are a lifelong resident of Norwich, or a visitor drawn to its historical charm, Norwich’s Literary Alphabet encourages you to discover, or rediscover, the stories that have made Norwich the literary city it is today.
